Peace Building in Communities: The Role of Unity and Understanding

Peace is one of the most essential elements for the growth and survival of any community. A peaceful community creates an environment where people can live without fear, pursue their goals, and contribute positively to society. It encourages development, strengthens relationships, and improves the overall quality of life.

On the other hand, a community without peace often experiences conflict, insecurity, mistrust, and slow progress.

Peace, justice and strong institutions as SDG 16 or Global Goal 16 is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015, the official wording is: “Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”.[1] The Goal has 12 targets and 23 indicators.

SDG 16 has ten outcome targets: Reduce violence; protect children from abuse, exploitation, trafficking and violence; promote the rule of law and ensure equal access to justice; combat organized crime and illicit financial and arms flows, substantially reduce corruption and bribery; develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions; ensure responsive, inclusive and representative decision-making; strengthen the participation in global governance; provide universal legal identity; ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms

STORYLINE – In the bustling town of Ilasẹ, the market square was the heartbeat of every week. Traders spread bright fabrics like captured sunsets, farmers stacked baskets of tomatoes and peppers, and the air carried the perfume of roasted corn and spices. At the center of the market stood one large shade tree. It was the best spot for selling goods because customers always gathered there to escape the heat.

For years, Mama Tolu sold fruits under the tree every Monday, while Baba Kunle sold woven baskets there every Thursday. They had an unspoken rhythm, smooth as drumbeats.

One week, however, the market festival was announced, Monday and Thursday trading would happen on the same day. Before sunrise, Mama Tolu arrived with oranges piled high like golden moons. To her surprise, Baba Kunle was already there arranging baskets beneath the tree.“This is my place on Mondays,” she said sharply.

“And Thursdays are mine,” he replied, gripping a basket handle.

Voices rose. Nearby traders leaned in like birds sensing crumbs of drama. A quarrel was moments away.

Then Amina, a teenage tailor’s apprentice, stepped forward. “Please wait,” she said. “Before you fight for the tree, ask why each of you needs it today.” They frowned, but the crowd quieted.

Mama Tolu sighed first. “My fruit spoils quickly in the sun. If I lose shade, I lose my goods.”

Baba Kunle nodded slowly. “My hands are weak from fever this week. I need to sit in the cool air, or I may not finish selling.”

The anger in the air loosened like a knot untied. Mama Tolu looked at his pale face. Baba Kunle noticed the soft spots already forming on her oranges.

Without another word, he moved half his baskets aside. “We can share the tree,” he said.

“And I will help call customers to your stall,” she answered.

Soon, the shade held both fruit and baskets, and laughter replaced tension. Customers bought more because the busiest corner of the market had become twice as lively. That evening, the elders praised Amina’s wisdom. She smiled and said, “Most fights grow in the dark. Understanding brings a lamp.”

Many of the conflicts that arise in communities are caused by misunderstanding, intolerance, selfish interests, inequality, and lack of communication. These issues can create divisions among people who should otherwise live together in harmony. For this reason, peace building has become an important responsibility for every society. Peace building involves deliberate efforts to prevent conflict, promote justice, and create lasting harmony.

Among the many factors that support peace building, unity and understanding stand out as two of the most powerful tools. When people choose togetherness and learn to understand one another, communities become stronger, safer, and more prosperous.

Peace building refers to the process of establishing long-term conditions that promote harmony and prevent violence or conflict. It is more than simply ending fights or disagreements. True peace building focuses on solving the root causes of conflict and creating systems that support fairness, cooperation, and respect.

Peace building may involve dialogue between groups, community development projects, education, reconciliation after conflict, and leadership that promotes justice. It is a continuous process that requires patience, commitment, and the participation of all members of the community.

Unity is the act of coming together for a common purpose despite differences in background, culture, religion, or social status. It teaches people to see themselves as members of one community rather than separate groups competing against each other. Unity is a strong pillar of peace because it encourages cooperation and shared responsibility.

When people are united, they are more willing to work together to solve common problems such as insecurity, poverty, poor sanitation, and lack of infrastructure. Community development becomes easier when members support one another rather than act in division. Unity also reduces hatred and prejudice because people learn to focus on what they share rather than what separates them.

In many communities, division based on ethnicity, religion, or politics has led to violence and mistrust. However, where unity is promoted, people begin to respect one another and recognize that progress benefits everyone. A united community is stronger, more stable, and better prepared to overcome challenges.

Understanding is the ability to recognize and respect the feelings, beliefs, needs, and perspectives of others. It requires listening with patience and responding with empathy. Many conflicts begin not because people hate one another, but because they fail to understand one another. Miscommunication, assumptions, and stereotypes often create unnecessary tension.

When understanding exists, people are able to discuss their differences peacefully. They become more patient and less likely to react with anger. Understanding also promotes tolerance, especially in diverse communities where people come from different cultural or religious backgrounds.

For example, a disagreement between neighbors may become serious if each side refuses to listen. However, when both parties take time to understand each other’s concerns, a peaceful solution can often be reached. In this way, understanding acts like a bridge across troubled waters, connecting people who might otherwise drift apart.

Unity and understanding are closely connected. Unity without understanding may be weak and temporary, while understanding without unity may not lead to collective action. When both values are present, communities experience lasting peace.

For instance, when people understand one another, it becomes easier to unite around common goals. Likewise, when people are united, they are more willing to listen and show empathy. Together, these values help communities resolve disputes, prevent violence, and create an atmosphere of trust.

There are several practical steps communities can take to build peace through unity and understanding:

Encouraging Dialogue: Regular meetings and open discussions help people express concerns and solve problems peacefully. Promoting Inclusive Leadership: Leaders should represent all groups fairly and avoid favoritism. Supporting Youth Involvement: Young people should be engaged in positive activities and leadership roles. Providing Education: Teaching tolerance, conflict resolution, and civic responsibility strengthens peace.Celebrating Diversity: Cultural events and shared celebrations can help people appreciate one another. Ensuring Justice: Fair treatment and equal opportunities reduce resentment and tension.

Despite its importance, peace building faces many challenges. Poverty can create frustration and competition over resources. Corruption and injustice may cause anger and distrust in leadership. Political manipulation can divide communities for selfish gain. Lack of education may also increase ignorance and intolerance.

Past conflicts sometimes leave wounds that take time to heal. Fear, bitterness, and suspicion can remain even after violence has ended. This is why peace building requires patience and continuous effort.

What they do in initiative for peace and comfort…

Peace building in communities is essential for social harmony, safety, and development. It is not the responsibility of leaders alone but of every individual. Unity brings people together to pursue common goals, while understanding helps them respect and appreciate one another’s differences. When these two values are practiced, conflicts reduce, trust increases, and communities become places where people can thrive.

Although challenges may arise, peace can be sustained through dialogue, fairness, cooperation, and empathy. A peaceful community is like a well-tended garden: it flourishes when everyone helps care for it.
